Foreigners As Residents In The UAE

A foreigner is eligible to live in the UAE as a resident if he/she is:

  • Being sponsored by a company in the UAE and is its employee
  • The employee of the government sector and the government entity is sponsoring him/her
  • An investor in any company in the UAE and he will apply under the sponsorship of her/his firm’s registered name 
  • Owner of a property in the UAE, the visa is sponsored under the property in this case
  • Dependents (dependents include parents, children, close relatives or house cleaners) can be sponsored by:
    • An employee in the UAE
    • An investor or business owner in the United Arab Emirates
    • A property owner in the UAE
  • A university student who is sponsored by a university in the UAE in which he/she is enrolled
  • A retired resident (special conditions apply in this case) 

A foreigner can only receive a residency visa if he/she has already entered the UAE through another permit, including a visitor or tourist visa. 


If you are of 18 years of age or above, you must

  • Undergo a thorough medical test to ensure that you are medically fit 
  • Pass a security check
  • Submit an application for an Emirates ID card from the federal authority for Citizenship and Identity


The validity of a residency visa of the UAE depends on the sponsor and visa type. It can be for 12 months, 2 or 3 years. However, recent changes declared that it could be valid for up to 5 or 10 years. Although this can happen because of certain conditions

Long-Term Residency Visa In the UAE

This system was implemented in 2019 in the UAE. This system allowed foreigners to work, study, and live without a national sponsor or 100% ownership of a business in the UAE. These visas have a validity of either 5 or 10 years. It will be renewed automatically upon expiring.  

Eligibility For A 10-Year Residency Visa

The following list of people who are eligible for a 10-year residency visa of the UAE:

1. An investor who has invested at least AED 10 million in public investments

 The investments can be in any form like:

  • You can establish a firm in the UAE with AED 10 million as capital
  • Getting a partnership in an already existing firm in the UAE with a share value of AED 10 million
  • An investment of AED 10 million in an investment fund in the UAE
  • Investing a total amount of AED 10 million divided in all of the above


Issuance of this visa comes with the following terms:

  1. There must be financial solvency up to AED 10 million 
  2. The money you invest must not be a loan from another party
  3. The investment will have to be retained for a minimum of three years

 The long-term visa can include the applicant’s children and spouse, one executive director, and one advisor. 

2. A person with exceptional talent:

This includes researchers in the field of knowledge or science and people with specialized abilities. Examples include specialists, doctors, innovators, scientists, and creative individuals in the areas of culture and art. The visa consists of the applicant’s spouse and children. All of these categories must have a valid employment contract in a specialized field of a priority in the United Arab Emirates. 


Issuance of this visa comes with the following terms:

  • A Scientist has to be a holder of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Medal for Scientific Excellence or accredited by Emirates Scientists Council 
  • A Creative individual in art and culture should be certified by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development
  • An inventor will have to obtain a patent of value that adds to the UAE’s overall economy. Patents will have to be approved by the Ministry of Economy.
  • Exceptional talents will have to be documented by scientific research published in a world-class journal or patents
  • An executive must own an internationally recognized and leading firm or must be a holder of high academic achievement or position
  • A specialist or a doctor must meet at least two of the following conditions:
  • A Ph. D. degree from one of the top 500 universities in the world 
  • A certificate or award of appreciation in the field of their work
  • Contribution in significant research in their respective field 
  • Must be a member of an organization related to their field 
  • Specialization in any area of priority in the UAE

Eligibility for a 5-year visa

The following list of people who are eligible for a 5-year residency visa in the UAE. 

1. Investors who have invested in a property located in the UAE


Issuance of this visa comes with the following terms:

  • The investor will have to invest in a property that has a gross value of at least AED 5 million
  • The money invested must not be a loan or on a loan basis 
  • The invested will have to be retained for a minimum period of three years

2. Entrepreneurs

This includes people who have an existing project with at least AED 500,000 capital, or those who are approved by an accredited business incubator in the country.

 An entrepreneur is allowed to get a multiple-entries visa for six months, which is renewable for another six months. The type of long-term visa includes the applicant’s spouse and children, three executives, and a partner. 

 3. Outstanding Students

  These include:

  • Exceptionally hardworking students with a minimum grade of 95% in private or public secondary schools
  • Outstanding university students within the UAE or outside the country who have a distinction GPA of minimum 3.75 upon their graduation

 Long-term visa also includes families of these exceptional students.
